Acetone

Acetone is a clear, fast-drying cleaning liquid. In fiberglass work it is used to clean brushes, rollers and tools before the resin hardens, and to wipe molds and parts free of dirt, grease and wax before a repair or bond.

How It Works

Cleaning Solvent

Cleaning tools with acetone
Cleaning Solvent
  • Overview: The go-to clean-up liquid for polyester, vinyl ester and epoxy resin.
  • Characteristics: It dissolves wet (uncured) resin, dries in seconds and leaves no residue behind.
  • Limits: Once resin has hardened, acetone will not remove it. Clean your tools straight after use.

Do's and Don'ts
  • Do: Clean brushes, rollers and mixing tools as soon as you finish.
  • Do: Wipe down a surface with a clean cloth and acetone before patching or bonding.
  • Don’t: Use acetone to thin resin or gelcoat. It weakens the finished part and can cause pinholes and discolouring. Use styrene thinner instead.
  • Don’t: Use acetone to wash resin off your skin. Use a proper hand cleaner and soap and water.
How It's Used

Usage and Applications

Keep acetone close by on every job. A quick clean while the resin is still wet saves your brushes, rollers and tools and keeps your next job free of old, hardened resin.

Usage / Applications

  • Cleaning brushes, rollers and tools
  • Removing wax and grease before repairs and bonding
  • Wiping down molds and work surfaces
  • Cleaning up wet resin spills

Safety tips

  • Acetone is highly flammable. Treat it like gasoline: no smoking, flames or sparks nearby.
  • Use it in a well-ventilated area and wear gloves and eye protection.
  • Keep the container tightly closed when not in use. It evaporates very quickly.
