Dry Calcium Powder

Dry calcium powder (calcium carbonate, sometimes called whiting) is a fine white mineral powder that you mix into polyester resin. It makes the resin go further, thickens it so it runs less, and turns it into a paste for filling and casting, all at a lower cost than using resin alone.

How It Works

Calcium Filler Powder

Measuring scoop of powder
Filler Powder
  • Overview: A low-cost white powder that bulks up resin.
  • Characteristics: It makes resin thicker and heavier, keeps it from shrinking as much, and sands easily once cured. The more you add, the thicker the mix becomes.
  • Typical uses: Putty and filler, filling gaps and holes, solid castings, and backing up the inside of molds.

Mixing Guide
  • 1. Resin first: Pour out your resin. If you want colour, stir in the pigment now.
  • 2. Add powder slowly: Stir the powder in a little at a time until the mix is as thick as you need. Use a little for a thicker resin, more for a paste.
  • 3. Hardener last: When you are happy with the mix, add the hardener (MEKP) and stir well.
  • 4. Test first: Mix a small test batch to check the thickness and cure time before a big job.
  • Remember: Too much powder makes resin weak and brittle. Do not use it in structural layers that need full strength.
How It's Used

Usage and Applications

Calcium powder is the everyday filler of the fiberglass shop. It is ideal when you need volume, a smooth fill or a solid casting rather than maximum strength.

Usage / Applications

  • Making putty and body filler
  • Filling gaps, holes and low spots before finishing
  • Solid castings and ornaments
  • Bulking up resin for non-structural parts

Safety tips

  • Wear a dust mask when pouring or mixing the powder.
  • Keep the bag tightly closed and dry. Damp powder clumps and does not mix well.
