Aerosil

Aerosil (fumed silica) is a very light, fluffy white powder that thickens resin. A small amount turns runny resin into a gel or paste that stays where you put it, so it does not drip or run down walls, corners or overhead surfaces.

How It Works

Resin Thickener

Measuring scoop of powder
Thickener
  • Overview: A lightweight powder that thickens resin and gelcoat without adding much weight.
  • Characteristics: It works with polyester, vinyl ester and epoxy resin. The more you add, the thicker the mix. Cured resin with Aerosil in it is harder to sand.
  • Typical uses: Stopping runs on vertical surfaces, making bonding putty, and filling corners and gaps.
Brush and mixing bowl
Mixing Guide
  • 1. Resin first: Pour out your resin and stir in any pigment.
  • 2. Add Aerosil slowly: Stir it in a little at a time. A small amount (about 1% to 3% by weight) stops resin running on walls. Keep adding to make a thick paste for bonding and filling.
  • 3. Hardener last: Add the hardener (MEKP) and mix well. Thick mixes need extra stirring.
  • 4. Mix gently: The powder is very light and floats easily, so stir slowly to keep the dust down.
How It's Used

Usage and Applications

Aerosil is the answer whenever resin will not stay put. Use it to keep gelcoat and resin on vertical and overhead surfaces, or to make a strong putty for bonding and filling.

Usage / Applications

  • Stopping resin and gelcoat from running on vertical surfaces
  • Bonding putty for joining parts
  • Filling corners and rounded joints (fillets)
  • Thickening resin to fill gaps

Safety tips

  • Wear a dust mask. The powder is very fine and floats in the air easily.
  • Keep the bag closed and dry.
