PVA

PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) is a liquid mold release. You spray or brush it over a waxed mold, and it dries into a thin, clear film that stops resin and fiberglass from sticking. When the part comes out of the mold, the film simply washes off with warm water.

How It Works

PVA Mold Release

What It Is
  • Overview: A water-based liquid that dries into a thin plastic skin between your mold and your part.
  • Characteristics: Resin cannot soak through it, it gives a smooth glossy finish, and it washes away with water. Used on top of mold wax, it gives you a second layer of protection.
  • Typical uses: New molds, freshly repaired molds, and detailed parts with deep corners where wax alone may not be enough.
Bottle of clear liquid
Step by Step
  • 1. Wax: Clean the mold, then apply 3 to 4 coats of mold release wax, buffing each coat to a shine.
  • 2. Mist coat: Spray or brush on a light first coat of PVA and let it dry for about 10 to 15 minutes.
  • 3. Full coats: Add two more even coats, letting each one dry fully (about 30 to 45 minutes).
  • 4. Check: The film should look smooth and glossy with no wrinkles or gaps in the corners. Now apply your gelcoat or resin.
  • 5. Clean up: After you take the part out, wash the film off the part and the mold with warm, soapy water.
How It's Used

Usage and Applications

Think of PVA as a safety net for your mold. It is the easiest way to make sure the first parts out of a new mold release cleanly, and it can also be brushed over a polyester repair so the surface cures hard and tack-free.

Usage / Applications

  • Bathtub, shower and boat molds
  • Detailed parts with deep corners or edges
  • New or freshly repaired molds
  • Top coat over polyester repairs for a tack-free cure

Safety tips

  • Apply thin, even coats. A coat that is too thick can wrinkle or crack.
  • Do not use PVA with water-based resins or materials that give off water while curing.
  • Keep the container closed and store it somewhere cool and dry, out of the sun.
